by Gampaha Group Correspondent Travelling between Colombo and Kandy will become much easier and quicker when the proposed Colombo-Kandy expressway is completed at a cost of 300 million US dollars. Central Region Development Minister Tissa Attanayake addressing a progress review meeting of the proposed Colombo-Kandy expressway project held at Sethsiripaya Battaramulla said the feasibility survey on the project has just been completed by the Swiss firm which was entrusted with the job. Minister Attanayake said the project has been planned in a manner that would keep dismantling of existing buildings and dislocation of settlements at a bare minimum.A greater part of the expressway will run through paddy fields and shrub jungle. From Kandy the proposed expressway will run to the north of the existing Colombo road unwinding through Katugastota, Haddeniya, Hataraliyadda, Pinnawela upto Warakapola. From Ambepussa it will run to the south of Colombo road through Mirigama, Udugampola and Kadawatha.Minister Attanayake said most part of the road will pass through paddy fields and shrub jungle avoiding congested towns like Kegalle. It will have 13 fly overs and underground tunnels to by pass 13 existing roads.During the first stage the expressway will have 4 lanes with possibility of extending it to 8 lanes subsequently. The present three hour journey from Colombo to Kandy by road will be reduced to less than an hour when the new 96 mile expressway is completed. |
