by Ananda Kannangara Around 2,500 needy children of Employees Trust Fund (ETF) members who passed the year five scholarship examination last year will receive Rs. 250,000 worth of scholarships in October this year. Each recipient will receive a scholarship of Rs. 10,000 under this program initiated by the ETF in August 1994. Speaking at a press briefing held in Colombo on Friday ETF Director Sarath Gamini highlighted the importance of granting scholarships towards the selected children of ETF members annually and said that this scheme will be continued considering a large number of students whose parents are financially not stable. "Every year we receive nearly 5,000 applications from students who are eligible for scholarships but due to available financial resources only a half of them will be granted the allocated number", he said. ETF, Deputy General Manager Gamini Gunawardana said that although it is a difficult task to increase the number of scholarships at present considering a merely 3 per cent of ETF amount currently obtained every month but steps will be taken to grant more scholarships in due course as a concession for students. |
