Indian Navy seeks Lankan help to rescue cargo vessel

by Ranil Wijayapala

Indian authorities have sought the assistance of the Sri Lanka Navy to rescue an Indian merchant cargo vessel sailing from Penang, Malaysia to Chennai that was sinking 80 nautical miles East of Mullaitivu, Navy sources told the Daily News.

A spokesman for the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka told the 'Daily News' that the ten crew members including the captain, Narendra Pal Singh of the vessel were reported missing.

However, an Indian coastguard helicopter and other rescue missions are trying to trace the crew members who jumped overboard and are believed to be marooned.

The attempts made by Indian and Sri Lanka Naval vessels to reach the sinking ship was futile due to the turbulence prevailing in the surrounding sea.

Indian and Navy rescue missions are trying to rescue the vessel and the crew members.
