A Vocational Training Centre was recently oepned under the Sri Lanka Vocational Training Authority in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Mawathagama under the patronage of Tertiary Education and Training Minister Kabeer Hashim. The centre comprising a two storeyed building constructed at a cost of Rs. 4.5 million is sponsored by Sri Lanka Plan International Institute. At the beginning, the centre will provide training for 100 school drop outs in the division, who seek vocational training in five courses including courses for gem-setting, Motor cycle repairs, Computer Technology and welding. Minister Kabeer Hashim said that under his Ministry he has provided vocational training to 150,000 school leavers at the rate of 20,000 a year, but only a few of them have found employment because they are trained in vocations that have a less demand in the job market. He said that in future, training courses will be organized with the assistance of Asian Development Bank to provide standard training in vocations that suit the demand in the job market. |
