World Habitat Day this year falls on Monday, October 7. The United Nations has declared the theme for this year's World Habitat Day as "City to City Co-operation". The World Habitat Day theme this year is a good opportunity for strengthening partnership between stake holder in human settlements sector exchanging lessons learned and improving the capacity building for successful development programs. With the commemoration of the World Habitat Day 2002, the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) has organised an art and essay competition for schoolchildren under the age limits of 5-10, 11-15 and 16-20. Applications and other details of this competition can be obtained from the Deputy General Manager (Information & Publicity), NHDA, Sir Chittampalam A Gardiner Mawatha, Colombo 2. Entries for the above competition will receive up to 13th September 2002. A special conference which is organised by the Ministry of Housing and Plantation Infrastructure to commemorate the World Habitat Day 2002 will be held on October 7, under the patronage of Minister of Housing and Plantation Infrastructure, Arumugam Thondaman. National policy makers, Government officials, NGO members and university professionals will participate in this conference. They will discuss various issues and prepare a national action plan on the theme of "City to City Co-operation". Other than the above activities, NHDA, National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Urban Development Authority, Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation, Colombo Municipal Council and other human development organisations will ceremonially inaugurate their development projects from October 1 to 7 to commemorate the World Habitat Day. |
