An EPDP cadre, David Michael Collin alias Murali was arrested in Trincomalee in connection with the murder of Jaffna journalist Mylvaganam Nimalarajan . The suspect was brought to Jaffna under heavy arm guard and produced before Mr. R. T. Vignarajah, Jaffna Magistrate. The police told the magistrate that a statement from the suspect has to be recorded. The suspect said that he did not wish to make a statement. The counsel for the suspect told the magistrate that the suspect had been assaulted by the police and he should be examined by a medical officer. He also alleged that the police had forced him to sign a statement written in a language unknown to him. The counsel submitted that the suspect fears that his life would be in danger if he is reminded in Jaffna prison. After recording the counsels submission, the magistrate ordered that the suspect be examined by the JMO and a report be submitted to court. The magistrate remanded the suspect till August 20th. |
