The peace process is going ahead and both sides are firmly on track for the negotiations in Thailand, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday. In an interview with ITN/Sirasa TV on his completion of 25 years as an MP, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said they were not overly concerned about a date [for commencing talks], but wanted to get the fundamentals in place for a solid start to the negotiations that could pave the way for peaceful Sri Lanka. The Prime Minister pointed out that "talks about talks" have already begun, with Minister Milinda Moragoda meeting LTTE Chief Negotiator Anton Balasingham in London. "This means that in a way, we are already talking to each other. Who thought this would happen a few months back ? We are well on our way to formal peace talks," he told the interviewer. "I firmly believe that we can bring peace to the country. We are committed to achieve this objective. The people have given us a mandate to establish peace and we will." |
