PGIM asked to maintain previous exam fees

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

The University Grants Commission (UGC) yesterday requested the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine to maintain the previous examination and course fees structure for postgraduate courses until a final decision is made by the relevant authorities.

Earlier, the GMOA expressed its displeasure over the increase in examination fees at the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine(PGIM) through several circulars.

Claiming that the PGIM had effected a four-fold increase in examination fees of Medical Graduates (From Rs 10,000 to 40,000), the GMOA urged the PGIM to suspend the implementation of the increased fees.

General Secretary of the GMOA Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya stated that the accepted norm in other countries is that the examination fee for a Post Graduate trainee is less than one third of a salary of a junior Medical Officer, whereas the particular circular has increased it to a figure equivalent to two and a half months salary of a Medical Officer." Therefore, this increase will greatly affect the Post Graduate trainees."
