by Uditha Kumarasinghe The Agriculture and Livestock Ministry will continue the Urea fertilizer subsidy provided to farmers. Arrangements have been made to reduce the subsidy given to a metric tonne of Urea fertilizer to Rs.2000 with effect from July 15. As a result the prices of Urea fertilizer in all provinces have been considerably increased. On the directive of Minister S.B.Dissanayake, the retail price of one metric tonne of Urea will be Rs.7000 while a 50 Kg of Urea bag will be sold to Rs.350. These fertilizer prices will remain unchanged until further notice, a Ministry spokesman told the Daily News. At present, the utilisation of fertilizer for paddy cultivation has become an essential factor in many parts of the island. In future, this fertilizer subsidy will be issued to farmers through a special coupon system named " Govijana Saviya" . But the Minister has instructed not to revise the fertilizer prices until this new program is implemented, he added. |
