Irrigation team inspect Vanni tanks

The Director of Irrigation and a team of Engineers of the provincial irrigation department headed by the Secretary, Provincial Ministry of Agriculture, Land, Irrigation and Livestock Development R. Thiyagalingam visited the Vanni and inspected three tanks which have not been properly maintained since 1983.

The tanks inspected by the team were Iranamadu, Thandimurippu and Muttiankadu which has a command area of 21,985 acres of land, 2,364 acres of land and 6,112 acres of land respectively. Due to lack of proper maintenance the bunds of these tanks appear to be damaged in certain portions. These three tanks are situated in the Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts.

It has been noted that a substantial amount of money is required to restore these tanks and as no funds are made available under Provincial Specific Development Grant (PSDG) and Criteria Based Grant (CBG) the North East Provincial Council is negotiating to obtain foreign funds for this work.

It has been found that the irrigation quarters and the office buildings at Muttaiankadu in Mullaitivu were completely damaged. This was a flourishing area once where paddy and subsidiary food cultivation mainly chillie cultivation were done. The irrigation office is now functioning in a small rented out house.
