Recording contract for Rohan Joseph

The Managing Director of the London-based Philharmonia Orchestra, David Whelton will arrive in Sri Lanka on Friday the 26th to sign a three-year recording contract of the complete Bruckner Symphony Cycle with Sri Lanka's internationally known conductor Rohan Joseph.

The signing will take place at Temple Trees and is expected to be witnessed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe himself. Foreign print media journalists and electronic media persons will also be present for the press conference to be held in this connection.

Talking to the 'Daily News,' Rohan Joseph said that the premier will witness the important signing as he is very keen on making Sri Lanka a hub of quality entertainment which would bring Western classical music enthusiasts from abroad.

As the Director of Opera India and of Opera Lanka which was inaugurated a few months ago, Rohan Joseph said that the world-famous operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti has confirmed dates in February next year for a concert in Colombo. Several other famous opera stars are also expected to perform in Colombo next year.

Nicknamed 'The Bruckner Juggernaut' by the New York media, for his fondness for conducting the music of this composer, Rohan Joseph requested that the signing of the contract with the Philharmonia Orchestra take place in his home country. Joseph is also well-known abroad for conducting the music of Beethoven as well as those of Wagner and other composers of Grand Opera such as Verdi and Puccini.

The Bruckner Symphony Cycle will be held in London's Royal Festival Hall in December with Rohan Joseph conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Prince Charles is Patron of the orchestra.
