By Rashomi Silva. All parliamentarians representing Hambantota district agreed to work together in providing relief to residents affected by the present drought. The decision was taken at a meeting held at the Parliamentary complex recently. Southern Region Development Minister Ananda Kularatne, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse and JVP Hambantota District MP Nihal Galapatti were among those who attended the meeting, a spokesperson for the Southern Region Development Ministry told the Daily News. The MPs agreed on the need for a more systematic way of distributing drought relief. It was also agreed to make a request to all parliamentarians and to the public interested in making donations to hand over such donations to the GA of Hambantota. Irrigation and Water Management Minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera has agreed to build 275 tube wells for the district, while the Social Services Minister Ravindra Samaraweera has agreed to provide drought relief to the Muruthu Wella 2 area. Minister Kularatne called for a 'Wewa sathiya' - a week for cleaning up the tanks and all major rivers and water streams in the district. The minister further pointed out that most of the streams originate in the Central Province. Some residents of the area have illegally set pipelines to draw water from the sources for domestic use and the for many other purposes. It was agreed that the irrigation ministry should take measures to stop illegal tapping and manage water systematically. |
