Private bus fares to be reduced

There will be a 2.5 per cent reduction in private bus fares to pass on the direct benefit of the reduction in fuel prices to the public, National Transport Commission Chairman A.B. Talagune told the Daily News yesterday.

He said the formula regarding the new bus fares has already been prepared and forwarded to Transport Minister Tilak Marapana for his approval.

There will be bus fare reduction ranging from 50 cents to Rs.5 according to this fare reduction. The fare reduction will not be applied to short distance bus fares.

The fare reduction will be implemented within the next few days once the Minister gives his approval, Talagune added.

He said the Government has given the full authority for the National Transport Commission to revise bus fares from according to the Bus Fare Policy approved by the Cabinet.

The Government has requested all sectors specially the public transport to provide direct benefit of the reduction of fuel prices to the public and the NTC took this step in accordance with this request, he added. (RW)
