The Irrigation and Water Management Ministry has taken immediate steps to reconstruct the river bank of the Yoda Wewa in the Mannar District. This decision was taken after a recent visit to the Mannar District by Gamini Jayawicrama Perera, the Minister of Water Management and Irrigation. According to ministry sources, the river bank is now in a state of erosion due to long time negligence. This was mainly due to the North-East war. Most of the families who fled for safer areas with the breaking out of war are now coming back as a result of the peaceful atmosphere prevailing in the area with the signing of the MoU. It is hoped to cultivate more than 25,000ha under the irrigation scheme and it is estimated nearly 10,000 of farmer families will be benefited. |
