Forged land deeds case: Two main suspects further remanded

The two main suspects in the sale of forged land deeds who had been remanded were yesterday further remanded till July 30 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge, Priyantha Fernando.

The Court directed the Prisons authorities to produce the suspects on July 30 for an identification parade.

On an application by the CID, the Judge directed the prisons authorities to produce the suspects before the Negombo Magistrate on July 27.

Earlier, the CID arrested the two suspects who are involved in the sale of forged land deeds and stolen vehicles following the arrest of two main suspects from Biyagama and Alawwa police areas.

The CID also recovered several forged deeds and vehicles including a tractor from the possession of the suspects.

The CID investigations revealed that the two suspects are wanted in a number of similar cases pending in several courts in the country. Over 50 warrants had been issued on them by these courts, the CID officials said. Ten cases had been reported to the CID against these suspects. Over 300 cases are pending before the other courts, the CID said.

The suspects were arrested by a special CID team when they were about to sell a land with a forged deed to an unsuspecting party in Colombo. The two suspects had arrived at the agreed place in a stolen vehicle, the officers said. Perusing the driving licence and the insurance of the vehicle, the CID found that those documents too had been forged ones.

Investigations also revealed that the suspects had sold each land for over rupees one million. A number of leading citizens and a leading business establishment have been inveigled by these suspects to buy land from them.

The main suspect who was arrested in Biyagama had been living in a luxury house, the investigators said.

A senior investigator yesterday told the "Daily News" that they would soon make a public announcement so that people who have bought lands on forged deeds and lost their vehicles could call over to assist in the investigations.
