Saudi Arabia severs hand of pickpocket RIYADH, Monday (Reuters) A Nigerian man had his right hand amputated in Saudi Arabia on Sunday after being convicted of pickpocketing under the kingdom's Islamic laws, the Saudi Press Agency reported. The agency carried an Interior Ministry statement saying that the man had been caught stealing at the Grand Mosque in Mecca. Saudi Arabia enforces strict Islamic sharia law which calls for the amputation of the right hand for theft. The conservative country also executes murderers, rapists and drug smugglers, usually by public beheading. |
