Two Philippine cargo ships collide, captain dead

MANILA, July 15 (Reuters) - A ship captain was killed and two of his crew were missing when two domestic cargo vessels collided early on Monday off a port on the central Philippine island of Cebu, the coast guard said.

The 908-ton MV Romeo, loaded with 32,000 bags of cement, sank after the collision with the smaller, 246-ton container carrier MV Alison off the coastal town of Naga, Petty Officer John Barrera said by telephone.

At least 22 other crewmen of the MV Romeo were rescued. There were no casualties reported among the 18 crew of the MV Alison, Barrera said.

He said the MV Romeo had just left port while the MV Alison was coming in when the collision occurred.

"The MV Romeo sank and its captain was killed... We still don't know how it happened," Barrera said, adding the coast guard was investigating the cause of the incident.

The collision occurred in fair weather about 1.5 nautical miles (2.8 km) from Naga port, he said.
