Umpire Camillus passes away

One of Sri Lanka's most senior cricket umpires D.C. Camillus Perera passed away on Sunday after a brief illness at the National Hospital Colombo.

At the time of his demise Camillus Perera was 66 years old and was holding the post of Manager Administration of the Association Of Cricket Umpires and scorers and a Senior Instructor for the Board Of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka.

He began his umpiring career in 1963 and retired prematurely in 1991 and stood in a solitary Test match played between Sri Lanka and Pakistan in 1985 when Dulip Mendis and Imran Khan captained the respective teams, and in a One day International between India in an era where Sri Lanka played fewer number of Test matches.

His loss will no doubt create a big vacuum among the umpiring fraternity in the country as his ability in conducting seminars for beginners or even seniors have helped to uplift the standard of umpiring in every grade. He was a source of inspiration for all umpires as he was ever ready to impart his knowledge to any one who sought his advice to improve the knowledge on cricket laws.

'Cammie' as he was fondly known was educated at St. Aloysious College, Ratnapura and St. Joseph's College, Colombo. He was one of the umpires who was not in favour of modern technology being used. His concept was that it should be either one hundred percent technology or nothing. He was also the editor of the newly and first ever magazine of cricket umpires 'Nompere'.

Till recently he contributed to the 'Daily News' on the Laws of Cricket and the amendments of the Law of Cricket year 2000 Code and various other aspects of the game and umpiring.

He belonged to the 'old bridgade' of cricket umpires and his contemporaries were J.M.C. Jayasinghe, M.A. Jayasinghe, Granville Hamer, late Fitzroy de Mel, Allen and Herbie Felsinger, A.C. de Silva, Gilbert Perera, Ignatius Anandappa, P.W. Vidanagamage, K.T. Francis, S. Ponnathurai, M.D.D.N. Gunaratne and Dooland Buultjens to name a few.

He leaves his wife, three sons and two daughters. Funeral arrangements will be notified later.
