HNB retain Marcentile 'A' division title by Chris Dhambarage The star studded Hatton National Bank team retained the Mercantile 'A' Division title for the second successive year when they defeated their arch rivals Sampath Bank 75-65 in the final worked off at the Otter Aquatic Club courts. The winners led 42-34 at half time with Gayan Meedeniya contributing 26 points. In fact Meedeniya was later selected as the best player in the 'A' Division tournament. Heshan Premachandra top scored for Sampath Bank with 22 points. In the 'B' Division final Ranawana Security Services defeated HSBC 68-62 after trailing 29-34 at half time. Ranawana Security produced a fine second half rally with Jeevara Sujith leading their fight back. In fact Sujith who contributed 20 points was named best player in the 'B' Division tournament. The 'C' Division title went to Delmege Forsyth 'B' team who beat Ceylinco 65-64 in a thriller after leading 34-29 at half time. The matchwinner for Delmege Forsyth was Praveen Fernando who netted a three point basket almost with the final whistle. Praveen Fernando was also named best player in the 'C' Division tournament. In addition Rasika Perera contributed 19 points while Pubudu Perera excelled for Ceylinco with 20 points. The tournament was conducted by the Mercantile Services basketball Association and sponsored by Hatton National Bank for the ninth successive year. Rienzie T. Wijetilleke Managing Director of Hatton National Bank Limited and Mrs. Wijetilleke were the chief guests at the finals.
