Matale schools - hockey champs by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen , Kandy sports correspondent Matale Schools 'Golds' routed the Colombo Schools 'Reds' 4-0 to clinch the boys championship title at the Schools Hockey Nationals organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association in the final played at Astro Turf Matale. At the 'breather', Matale boys led 2-0. Matale Schools 'Golds' keeping to their reputation as the 'cradle of hockey' in Sri Lanka played fast and furious hockey which unsettled the Colombo Schools 'Reds' who could not match up to the standards of the home team. Matale Schools 'Golds' scored early in the game through its star centre forward M.M. Ghazzali and the Colombo team never recovered from that early shock, though they tried their best to equalise through their forwards. Just before the short blast, right extreme Duluka Weerasuriya boosted Matale's morale further when he took play inside the 'D' and sounded the boards with a scorcher. Matale continued to dominate after the turnaround and it was centre forward M.M. Ghazzali who made the opening again when he drove powerfully to beat the Colombo 'Reds' custodian. Then in the final minutes of play, fullback D.B. Dissanayake put the issue beyond doubt when he received slanned pass from Ghazzali and dribbled into the 'D' and slammed into the boards. Indrawansa Herath and M.B. Herath umpired. In the semi-finals, Matale Schools 'Golds' trounced Galle Schools 7-1 and Colombo Schools 'Reds' beat Matale Schools 'Maroons' 3-1. Matale Schools 'Maroons' clinched the third place by defeating Galle Schools 4-1 on penalty strokes after scores stood at one all at the end of the regulation time. The above matches were umpired by S.S. Liyanage, Mangala Karunaratne, S. Bernard, Sathis Kumar and D.S. Wijesinghe.
