Short-term solution to get down surgeons from abroad - Health Minister

by Kahawa special correspondent

A shortage of surgeons in hospitals will be dealt with by getting down surgeons from abroad as there is no short-term solution, said Health, Nutrition and Welfare Minister P. Dayaratne at Balapitiya on Friday.

He was in Balapitiya base hospital on an inspection tour on his way home from Hambantota.

One thousand specialist doctors are under training now and it takes four years for them to come out. Even after that they will have to undergo another training abroad. The presidential task force program to develop selected hospitals to Base Hospital level islandwide will never be subjected to a change and the program will go on.

The Minister said developing primary hospitals in the periphery of base hospitals will help ease tension in base hospitals.

Shortcomings are frequent in all the hospitals, but we have to meet them slowly - step by step.

Ministry Secretary Reggie Perera said, that the Balapitiya hospital has come a long-way from its inception. Medical staff insufficient, but yet there is no surgeon and I will appoint a surgeon soon.

The Nurses shortage islandwide amounts to 5,000 and we have only three schools of nursing. I will post 10 more nurses soon to your hospital, he said responding to a request made by the Head Nurse, Indranie de Silva.
