Shasanarakshaka Mandala Siritha introduced

by Nadira Gunatilleke

The Department of Buddhist Affairs has planned to build a closer rapport and co-ordination between the village temple and the Buddhist public (Dayakas) in an effort to make the temple the centre of the socio-economic development of the village. For this purpose, the Department has already introduced the "Shasanarakshaka Mandala Siritha", a proclamation which will guide the temple and its devotees to achieve this target, the Commissioner, Buddhist Affairs, H.W.D.Sunil told the "Daily News" yesterday.

The Commissioner said that "Shasanarakshaka Mandala Siritha" is a proclamation that defines the responsibilities of the Maha Sangha towards Dayaka Daikas and the duties of the Buddhists towards Maha Sangha. The proclamation has been sent to all the temples in the country.

The proclamation presents a clear view of the Sambuddha Sasanaya, Shasanarakshaka Mandalaya, Buddhasasana Ministry, the responsibilities of Maha Sangha and the duties of the Dayaka Daikas. It also describes the function of a Buddhist Viharaya as the centre of socio-cultural development of the village. According to the proclamation, the Viharaya should also operate as a economic development centre, mediation centre and the educational centre of the area.

About 15 Bhikkus have already responded positively towards this proclamation by sending in their views about it", the Commissioner said.

Explaining the main objective of this program Buddhasasana Ministry Secretary N.W.Weralupitiya said that the guidelines will help to use the village temple as the centre for the total socio-economic development of the village. "Therefore, this is a kind of "Spiritual Package", he said.
