The annual convocation and induction ceremony of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka will be held at the Bandaranaike International Conference Hall on August 2 from 5 p.m. onwards. The chief guest will be Tilak Marapane, Minister of Defence, Transport and Highways, and Aviation, and the Guest of Honour will be Eng. Saman Ediriweera, Secretary, Ministry of Tertiary Education and Training. The Executive Secretary Russel de Zilwa in a press release states: On this occasion, the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, will confer Chartered Engineer status on 167 young men and women who have qualified on merit and grant Associate Membership status on 17 others. Additionally, five young Junior Inventors will receive scholarships that should see them through to graduation. All these young people have taken and passed tough examinations that included rigorous practicals in order to equip them for the very real intellectual and physical challenges posed by the profession of engineering and its high standards of profesionalism and integrity. These are the best of the best who will join others in the field to change lives and lifestyles in consonance with the imperative of sustaining the environment for future generations to enjoy. Their education and training and the continuing professional development programmes they will continue to participate in will bring out latent qualities of leadership that will help them serve the community-at-large, ensuring public safety and well-being at all times. It might be mentioned that this is the Institution's 96th year, it having been formed on the 6th of January 1906 at Anuradhapura during the governorship of HE Sir Henry Arthur Blake (1903-07), making it the oldest professional organisation in existence in Sri Lanka today. |
