Report on armoured vehicles out today

The Cabinet Sub Committee report on the purchase of luxury armoured vehicles by the Presidential Secretariat under the previous regime will be out today, according to Government sources.

The four member Cabinet Sub Committee comprising Ministers K. N. Choksy PC, John Amaratunga, Ravi Karunanayake and Dr. Rajitha Senaratne is due to hand over the report to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe when they meet for the pre-Cabinet briefing at Temple Trees today.

The Cabinet Sub Committee was appointed to probe the circumstances under which funds were released by the Treasury for the purchase of luxury vehicles at the instance of the Presidential Secretariat by-passing Cabinet and tender procedures.

A total of 2.3 billion had been released by the Treasury for the purchase of 48 luxury vehicles while the Cabinet had approved only Rs 63 million.

Several Cabinet Ministers are to urge Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to call for an explanation from the former Treasury Secretary Dr. P. B. Jayasundara on his role in the release of Treasury funds sans Cabinet approval.

They are also due to agitate for legal action against Jayasundara based on his explanation. Reports indicate that the number of Ministers gunning for Jayasundara had increased considerably following the gravity of the evidence against him.
