Secretary - The Management Link

The Institute of Human Development and Training (IHDT) has organised a workshop on Secretary - The Management Link on July 30 from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., at the Institute of Government Accounts and Finance, Olcott Mawatha, Colombo 10.

The workshop is open to all Secretaries, Administrative assistants, Staff assistants, Executive assistants, regardless of their current job title, if they support multiple bosses.

The workshop curriculum is developed by Prabhath Patabendi, Course Director of IHDT and according to him today's Secretaries are involved in a dynamic new type of workplace alliance with their bosses and are often called upon to communicate, plan, organise, negotiate and participate in the decision making process at very high levels. This expanded role will open new opportunities and career options to exceptional Secretaries than ever before.

The workshop will cover Basic strategic management techniques, Public Relations and Communication Skills, Grooming and Deportment, Dress codes and General House-keeping, conflict and confrontation and Mentoring.

The chief resource person of the workshop is Mrs. Mallika Manuratne, former Asst. General Manager (Training and Productivity), Hatton National Bank and at present Lecturer, Post Graduate Institute of Management (PIM). The other two resource persons are Mrs. Clodette De Silva, Chief Secretary, ICRC and S.B. Abeykoon, UN Expert (Training).

IMSL workshop on Time Management

The Institute of Management (IMSL) in its silver jubilee year will conduct a workshop on Modern Concepts of Time Management, on Wednesday, July 24, at 5.30 p.m. at the SLAAS Centre, Colombo 7.

The guest speaker is T. M. Jayasekera, a fellow member of the Institute, and at present the Dean of the ICBT campus.

Certificate course in security management

The Industrial Security Foundation will launch its formal training with its 'Maiden' certificate course, in accordance with its declared objects, among which is to 'Promote and Encourage the Science and Professional Practice of providing security to Industrial and Commercial Establishments'.

The course is structured to prepare selected participants for Jnr. Management in Industrial Security Operations. This will be in two modules. Module 1 starts on July 20. The content will be Security Operations (principles/methods/applications), Basic of Law, Leadership, People Management, Communication Skills, Fire Prevention and Procedures.

The resource personnel will be from the ISF and outside, qualified locally and abroad. A certificate will be granted to successful participants under the Seal of the Industrial Security Foundation (Sri Lanka) Inc.

"CNCI Achiever of Industrial Excellence"

The first 'awards ceremony' to be organised by the Ceylon National Chamber of Industries will be held on Friday, July 19 at the Ceylon Continental Hotel.

The 'CNCI Achiever of Industrial Excellence' will be recognised and honoured by The Ceylon National Chamber of Industries.

Over 150 applications have been received for each category.

United Breweries CEO retires

Mervyn Rodrigo, Director / Chief Executive Officer of United Breweries Lanka Ltd retired from service yesterday.

Mr. Rodrigo was involved in the brewing industry for the last 34 years and was with United Breweries Lanka Ltd from its inception and was responsible for the development of the products currently marketed by UBLL and headed the technical and production division of the company.

Nagendra elected CMI chairman

Sega Nagendra, Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) of UK was unanimously elected chairman for the year 2002/2003 to succeed Anil Weeratunga at the Annual General Meeting of the Chartered Management Institute - UK Sri Lanka branch at the Galle Face Hotel.

Mr. Nagendra is well-known in the airline, travel and construction industry being a director of number of companies. He was a former senior director of Carson Cumberbatch and Co. Ltd.

He is currently chairman PATA Sri Lanka Chapter, and Executive Committee member of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. He is the vice chairman of Sri Lanka Benelux Business Council and Vice Chairman of the Sri Lanka-Pakistan Business Council. He was also the former chairman of the import section of Ceylon Chamber of Commerce for a number of years.
