Committee to look into land problems of Ratnapura industrialists

Industries Minister Rohitha Bogollagama has appointed a committee to look into land problems faced by industrialists in the Ratnapura district.

Ratnapura industrialists who met the Minister last week pointed out that the titles of lands allocated by the Industrial Development Board (IDB) have not handed over to them as yet due to administrative delays. They said that due to the delay they were finding it difficult to obtain bank loans to launch their industries.

The committee comprises the Deputy Land Commissioner and the Deputy Surveyor General of the region, an IDB representative, a senior official of Small Holder Development Ministry and a representative of the industrialists in the area.

The Minister recommended that a survey of the lands should be done on or before July 30 and to make arrangements to transfer the titles of these lands to the respective parties.

The industrialists also pointed out that they were undergoing financial difficulties due to high interest rates on bank loans.

A senior Bank of Ceylon official at the meeting said that a special unit was set up to issue bank loans on a priority basis at special interest rates and the bank offered other services such as leasing to industrialists.

He said that special consideration would be accorded to projects approved by the IDB which have a big market share.

Industrialists also pointed out that they were undergoing difficulties due to inadequate telephone facilities. The Minister instructed the Regional Telecommunication Officer who was present at the meeting to look into the matter and take remedial measures.

It was also brought to the notice of the Minister that the power supply provided to the industrial zones was often disrupted. Minister Bogollagama instructed the Ceylon Electricity Board representative to conduct a power audit in the zone and submit a report by the end of this month.

The Minister also instructed the IDB to take steps to set up green belts surrounding industries to ensure environment protection. - (C.K.)
