The A5 Kandy-Batticaloa road which was closed from Maha Oya to Chenkalady for the last seven years will be opened for the public today.The Government and the LTTE agreed two weeks ago for the opening of the road for the public. The Government also made the necessary arrangements for the opening of the road within the last two weeks.

Two members of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) were held aboard an LTTE vessel against their will in the waters off Jaffna late on Saturday night, the Mission's spokesman Teitur Torkelsson told the Daily News.

Committee exposes fraud

The official Committee examining the purchase of arms for the Security Forces has found numerous incidents of fraud running into millions of rupees. Defence Minister Tilak Marapana appointed this committee to inquire into the corruption and malpractice in purchasing arms and other items for the forces over the past six years.

FMM condemns President's threat

The Free Media Movement (FMM) yesterday called on President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to desist from taking over the state media and asked the country's media to report the debate on the import of armoured cars accurately, fairly and without bias.

Petrol down by another rupee

The price of a litre of petrol will go down by a further one rupee from today, on top of the Rs.6.50 reduction announced by the government last week. The new price is Rs.47.50 per litre.
