I as the Minister of Housing would extend my help to assist building houses for the lower income families in the Hambantota district. Arrangements have been made to construct 1,200 houses in the district covering all DS areas, the Minister of Housing and Estate. Infrastructure Arumugan, Thondaman said. The Minister was so addressing on his first official visit to oversee the proposed Gam Udawa housing sites at Thamennawa and Weheragoda in Bandagiriya in the Hambantota DS area, recently. He said late President R. Premadasa was the pioneer of the Gam Udawa program. The late president's aim was to serve the down-trodden masses of the island, therefore the Ministry of Housing decided to assist one of the deserving districts of the island. Minister Thondaman said, for the first time, as member who represents a minority community, has been entrusted with an influential ministry, which I represent, under the UNF Government. This shows the clear policies of the present government to provide equal opportunity for all communities in the island, he added. Deputy Minister of Health Sajith Premadasa said, we have been able to fulfill one of the election pledges by initiating the Gam Udawa program in the Hambantota district. He said apart from Hambantota district, Gam Udawa program will be initiated in Nuwara Eliya, Anuradhapura and Batticaloa districts in the first stage. Chairman NHDA T. D. G. Kalyanarathna, Hambantota district MP Dilip Wedaarachchi, GM, NHDA C. A. Wijeweera Jalani Premadasa and several others were also present. |
