Ministry to increase AL/IT classes

by Manjula Fernando

The Education Ministry will increase the number of schools with Advanced Level IT classes to 1000 by next year.

One year IT course for Grade 12 students were introduced in 400 IAB schools from last April. The National Institute of Education (NIE) which is entrusted with teacher training will complete training of teachers from additional 600 schools by next August to achieve this target, IT consultant to the Education Ministry Dilantha Vithanage said.

The project was implemented from this year with funds from the World Bank under their General Education project II and the Asian Development Bank under their Secondary Education Modernisation Project both of which were already in progress.

"The Education Minister is anxious to see that we make maximum benefit out of these projects and we decided to acquire funds for the AL IT program out of these already continuing projects," Mr.Vithanage said.

In response to the Public sector outcry for IT skills development from school level the ministry has now aimed its full focus on improving school IT education and within the last two months it has provided 188 North and East schools with computers out of its consolidated funds.

So far the Ministry has provided 800 computers to 80 schools, ten schools from each province, with WB funds and they have also agreed to supply computers to 320 more schools. The ADB will provide 800 schools, a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 a school, depending on the student population within the next two years.

A special exam will be conducted at the end of the course by the Examinations Department to award a certificate which will be helpful to those who enter the employment market after AL.
