'ANCL jak tree planting campaign fulfils a national need'

by Sigiriya group correspondent

Jak tree planting campaign launched by Lake House fulfils a national need. It has multifarious significance. We of the BoC up-hold its environmental, economic and social values, said M. Sameek Manager of BoC Dambulla at a simple ceremony held at Weera Mohan Jayamaha Vidyalaya.

He distributed 100 coconut saplings among the schoolchildren, collected through their customers to be planted in their school and home gardens. He also distributed some school bags and children's caps, to mark the occasion. This is not only planting a tree, it opens the eyes and creates awareness of the philosophy behind the move initiated by the Lake House. Indiscriminate destruction of jak trees, a very nutritious food source is brought to notice by this act, said Sameek, the Manager, asking students to carry out a programme as a national task rightthrough their life. Mr. E. Edmund Deputy Director of Education Dambulla said that Lake House has resuscitated an old campaign originated by late Arthur V. Dias, popularly known as Kos Mama.

Mr. Kapilaratne Banda, the Principal of the school too addressed the meeting.
