by Panadura group correspondent A. M. Amiras Majeed, Chairman of the Panadura Pradeshiya Sabha introduced a new concept for the daily collection of garbage from houses. A fleet of bicycle carts will call at houses in the area daily to collect garbage. This new service is considered an asset to the Pradeshiya Sabha because economically no fuel will be used on pedal cycles unlike in the case of tractors. Thirty men were provided employment. They will have to pedal the bicycle carts on daily rounds visiting houses to collect garbage and bring it to the dump. Explaining the objectives of the new project, Chairman Majeed invited Muslim Congress leader and the Shipping Minister Rauff Hakeem who visited the Kehelwatte sub office of the Panadura Pradeshiya Sabha on Monday to inaugurate the new peoject. Land Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne and the Minister of Shipping Rauff Hakim inspected the bicycle carts more economically manufactured to be utilised in the project. It cost only Rs. 13,000 per bicycle cart. Pradeshiya Sabha Councillors were also present on the occasion with the ratepayers. |
