Former prisons chief heads Tangalle probe

The government has appointed a three-member committee chaired by former Commissioner General of Prisons C. T. Jansz to inquire into the Tangalle Prison incident on July 1.

The other two members are Chandra Ekanayake, Senior Assistant Secretary, (Administration) of the Interior Ministry and M. B. Raban, former Senior Superintendent of Police.

The Committee was appointed by Interior Ministry Secretary M. N. Junaid on a directive of Minister John Amaratunga, an Interior Ministry news release stated.

The Committee will inquire and report on the events which led to the Tangalle jail incident. It will also ascertain whether any outsiders were involved in the incidents, preplanning, conspiracy or connivance on the part of officials.

The committee will investigate the role played by the Prisons Officials and make suggestions on preventing such incidents in the future.

The committee has been requested to submit its report within two months with a provision to submit interim reports on any findings and recommendations early.
