Traditional Sinhalese dance and music cultural show performed by the students at Ananda College Students at Ananda College and the school Dancing Circle have organized a Sri Lankan Dance and Music Cultural Show with the participants of students from July 8-10. The objective of the show is to raise funds for the development/cultural activities of the Society and to establish a cultural institution in the school with all traditional costumes. From very early times, the festivities of the people of Ceylon, secular as well as those connected with the religion, have been enliven with dance, song and instrumental music. Dancers and musicians are referred to in the Brahmi inscriptions of Ceylon, in Pre-Christian times. From Mahavamsa we have a reference to dancing as early as 3rd century B.C. in the reign of King Pandukabaya. In general three types of cultural dances called "Udarata Netume, Pahatharata Netume, Sabaragamu Netume" exist according to the areas, "Ves netum" in Kandian dance and "Devol netum" in low country dancing mainly adapted by the professionals have gained exceptional reputation. Falk dancing that demonstrate the rigorous training and dexterity of the performer uses Leekely, Kulu and Raban in their dance. |
