Marambe retained as select committee chairman

by Dinesh Weerawansa

Former Sri Lanka captain, Tikiri Marambe has been retained as chairman of selectors of the national rugby selection committee by the Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports, Johnston Fernando.

This will be the third successive time that Group captain Marambe has been made chairman of selectors, incidentally by three different sports ministers - probably a record in any local sport. First, it was then Minister of Samurdhi & Sports and present Minister of Agriculture, S.B. Dissanayake who identified the capabilities of Marambe and brought him as chairman of selectors, against nominations submitted by the SLRFU in 2000.

In the very next year (2001), Marambe was retained for his second successive term as selection committee chief by then Minister of Tourism & Sports and present Minister of Plantations, Lakshman Kiriella and now by Minister Fernando has kept him for a record third year in-a-row. Marambe was recommended by the SLRFU as chairman of selectors this year.

But the surprise came when Minister Fernando overruled the SLRFU decision to sack dedicated selector Ravi Wijenathan, who was not included in the original list of five members, recommended to the Minister by the SLRFU this month. While approving the five names submitted by the union, Minister Fernando took a bold decision to bring back Wijenathan, one of the few selectors seen at most of the matches in a talent search. Hence the SLRFU there are six in the new committee as Minister Fernando brought Wijenathan.

Besides chairman Marambe and Wijenathan, the only other person to retain his place from the previous selection committee is Saman Jayasinghe, who led Sri Lanka in 1982 Asiad. The only other former national captain in the committee is chairman Marambe, who led the Lankan side at the 1988 Asiad. The three new faces in the committee are Brian Baptist, Japuna Jayawardena and Hemantha Yatawara, three of the outstanding former Sri Lanka ruggerites.

Going out from the previous selection committee are Dharmasiri Madugalle, Daya Jayasundara and Chula Dharmadasa.
