Medical equipment and generator for rural hospitals

by Ginigathena special correspondent

Although the Laxapana rural hospital has electricity and is in a very famous hydro-power generating area. A generator for the hospital in an emergency is a long-felt need.

The Hospital Development Committee in collaboration with the CEB's Deputy Engineer's office in Laxapana, the Haskel Garment Factory in Morahenagama and the generous people in the area have taken steps to donate a consignment of medical equipment and a generator to the Laxapana hospital in the Ambagamuwa Korale in the Nuwara Eliya district.

The handing over the generator and medical equipment for the hospital was held at the CEB's sports and social club in Laxapana under the patronage of the Deputy Provincial Director of Health Services in Nuwara Eliya S. Nimalsiri.

Mr. Nimalsiri said that he was thankful to the Laxapana Hospital Development Committee for taking initiative to donate these items to the hospital.

The Nuwara Eliya district consists of 14 district hospitals and two rural hospitals (Peripheral Units). One of them is the Laxapana hospital which has been maintained as a peripheral Unit for the past four decades.

Therefore the Laxapana hospital should be upgraded to a district hospital so that a very large number of residents in the Laxapana area can be provided a better service, he said.

The Chief Medical officer of the Laxapana hospital Dr. S. D. Pathirana said that he would do his best to develop the hospital.

However, I request the authorities to take steps to elevate the Laxapana hospital to a district hospital so that we will be able to render a better service for the Laxapana area.

Ven. Galawindune Gunananda Thera, Secretary of the Laxapana hospital Development Committee, its organiser S. K. Abeyratne and former Ambagamuwa PS Member A. G. Piyadasa also spoke.
