'Students can learn a lot from sports'

by Mohammed Rasooldeen in Riyadh

Sports helps students to develop a culture not only to win but also to concede defeat and learn from it, said Sri Lankan Ambassador Ibrahim Sahib Ansar. He was speaking at the Colours Night at the Sri Lankan International School in Riyadh on Thursday. The function held under the chairmanship of school principal S.H.M. Jameel.

Twenty students received their colours and an equal number received awards and certificates from the Sri Lankan ambassador for their excellent performances. The Sportsman of the Year was Rukshan Gunawardene who won the best athlete award and two certificates of merit for winning in other games. Colours were awarded to students who participated in several indoor games such as draughts, chess, carom, scrabble and outdoor games like cricket, athletics and badminton.

Ansar said that students learn a variety of things from the playing field that will eventually be helpful in their future career. Therefore students should make use of their school for their future benefits. The envoy also commended the excellent performance of the students both in the classroom and from the playing grounds.

Principal Jameel said that this is the third occasion in the 14 year history of the school, that the institution was able to celebrate the Colours Night to honour the sportsman who have excelled in their respective fields of sports. He stressed that the knowledge a student gains from the classroom should have transferability, application, problem solving capacity and relevance. This must transform students to be dynamic personalities in the future, he said. "Sports, games and athletics are ingredients in this moulding process of the school life", he added.

The head prefect Erandi De Silva delivered the welcome address while the vote of thanks was given by Fawzan Ghulam.

The Best Sportsman of the Year at the Sri Lankan International School in Riyadh, Rukshan Gunawardene received his trophy from the Sri Lankan ambassador Ibrahim Sahib Ansar.
