The Dambakolapatuna, a historic shrine in Jaffna, is being reconstructed as a shrine suitable for pilgrims. This is said to be the destination of Therini Sanghamittha who arrived in the island carrying a sapling of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Minister Jayalath Jayawardane told Lankapuvath. History records that Therini Sanghamitta handed over to King Devanampiyatissa a sapling of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in the 236th year of the Buddha. The development activities were launched with the intervention of the Sri Lanka Navy. A new Buddhist shrine by the name of Sanghamitta was built with the participation of seamen serving in Jaffna and the Navy Buddhist Association on the instructions of Navy Chief Vice Admiral Daya Sandagiri. It was declared open recently. A sapling of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi was also planted in the premises of the shrine. A Buddha statue received from Thailand has been placed in the shrine room. 15 Bhikkus including the Viharadhipathi of the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya Ven. Kollupitiye Sangharakkhitha thera were present at the opening ceremony. Two kovils have also been constructed adjacent to the shrine. |
