by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Three Government medicos took to their heels when the Flying Squad officials of the Ministry of Health surrounded their official quarters to detect those who were engaged in private practise while on official duty. The incident occurred at a district hospital in the Pothuvil area a few days ago. Flying squad officials acting on a tip off visited the hospital around 10.00 am and found that there was not even a single doctor at the OPD while nearly 100 patients were awaiting treatment. The doctors concerned were alleged to have been engaged in private practice at their quarters opposite the hospital. Noting this the flying squad dispatched one of its members in the guise of a patient to apprehend offenders. He had taken his turn with the other patients and let himself for examination by one of the doctors. The errant doctor suddenly bolted from the room apparently smelling a rat. He locked himself inside the quarters and refused to come out. His colleagues too had fled the scene and had not reported to the hospital. "The three doctors are yet to report for duty at the hospital and we are now taking steps to bring them to Colombo to record their statement for further course of action," an investigating official told the Daily News. The DMO of the hospital was also not present at that time, the official added. Further investigations are conducted under the guidance of Flying Squad Director H. A. Ariyawansa. |
