Ransom case suspects remanded till June 28

Elpitiya magistrate H.M.R.Manjula Thilakeratne yesterday remanded the two suspects in the Kosgoda ransom case until June 28.

Chaminda de Soysa, a former STF soldier and Lanka Karunaratne, an Ayurvedic Medical Student were brought to Court in a prison vehicle under heavy guard. No lawyer appeared on their behalf. They were finger printed on the orders of the Magistrate and taken back to the Galle Remand Prison under strict police security.

A crowd of over 1,000 protesters demonstrated peacefully near the Elpitiya Magistrate's Court from yesterday morning, urging lawyers not to appear for the suspects who were taken into custody in connection with the alleged kidnapping of schoolgirl in Kosgoda. The suspects allegedly collected Rs.2.4 million as ransom from the girl's parents to release her. The demonstrators carried placards condemning the crime.
