Dengue claims two more lives

Two more students, a six-year-old boy and a seven-year-old girl died of dengue raising the recorded dengue death toll to 18 yesterday, hospital sources said.

The latest victims were Yasan Lakshantha Gunawardena of Madampe and a student of Ratnawali Balika Vidyalaya of Borella resident in Maligawatte.

Several leading city schools including Royal College were closed yesterday as a precautionary measure to facilitate the cleaning of possible mosquito breeding places and the Government was to issue a special statement yesterday evening detailing emergency measures to combat the dengue epidemic.

Meanwhile, the authorities repeatedly urged the public to assist them in their endeavour to combat dengue by keeping the environment clean and taking measures to eradicate mosquito breeding grounds.
