Scientific knowledge for farmers and fishermen through informal educational centres - Minister Kodituwakku

by Nadira Gunatilleke

Minister of Human Resources Development Education and Cultural Affairs said that science has become one of the important tools in the world today. Therefore arrangements were made to provide basic scientific knowledge for the farmers, fishermen and other ordinary people through informal education centres.

He was speaking at the 31st annual sessions and graduation ceremony of the Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon at the Savsiripaya auditorium, Colombo 7 on June 19.

He said: 'We have to produce employable graduates. Today the labour market is no longer limited to the local labour market and English language is essential when seeking foreign employment. Many graduates who pass out today face difficulties when seeking employment. We cannot escape from this reality and therefore we have to seriously think about this situation without becoming emotional.'

Minister Dr. Kodithuwakku said that in 1991 90,000 Lankan students qualified for admission to the local universities but only 12500 were admitted. Another few thousand students entered the Colleges of Education. Rich parents send their children to foreign universities. One of the major challenges faced by the Education Ministry today is providing higher educational facilities to meet the demand.

The President, Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon, Professor Tuley De Silva said that a three-storeyed building complex will be set up to house the institution and requested all well wishers to contribute to the project. He also said that the scholars attached to the institution are always looking forward to assist Government endeavours.

Professor John Hill of La Trobe University, Victoria, Australia and Dr. S.A.A. Jayaweera of the University of Teeside, U.K. were the special invitees.
