Matale residents in peace procession to Nagadeepa In appreciation of the present peace process continuing under the leadership of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, people in Matale have decided to construct a pilgrims rest at the Nagadeepa Viharaya, at a cost of Rs. 10 million, Nagadeepa Viharaya Religious Rest Construction Committee Chairman and Matale District MP Ranjith Aluvihare said. It is also decided to visit the Nallur Hindu temple and to offer a 19 ft. "Gnanavel" at a special ceremony arranged for the purpose. The 19 ft. "Gnanavel" symbolises the 19 years war between the government forces and LTTE which ceased after the signing of the peace accord. We propose to accomplish these twin objectives with the voluntary contributions made by residents of the Matale district. The proposed pilgrims rest would be a two-storied building consisting of 20 comfortable and spacious rooms, a rest room and a kitchen. The foundation for the religious rest room would be laid on June 23 and it is planned to complete this project within one year. A procession of devotees will leave Aluvihare historic temple premises on June 22 at 7 a.m. and proceeding to Dambulla will be joined by 1,000 motor cyclists and 500 three-wheelers. Chairman of Provincial Council, Members of Parliament and others making a total of 4,000 will participate in a procession to Nagadeepa. On June 22, lunch for the visitors will be provided at Kilinochchi by the LTTE and dinner served at Nagadeepa Viharaya by Minister of Hindu Religious and Cultural Affairs T. Maheswaran. On June 23 devotees will proceed to Nallur Hindu Temple in procession carrying the 'Gnanavel' to be offered at the Nallur Hindu Temple, at a special ceremony. |
