Steps to safeguard domestic Footwear industry Industries Minister Rohitha Bogollagama has assured footwear manufacturers in the country that the Government would introduce measures to safeguard the domestic footwear industry by putting a stop to the import of footwear. Footwear manufacturers who met the Minister recently have complained that they face severe difficulties in the local market due to the dumping of cheap footwear from countries such as China and the practice of under-invoicing by importers, Ministry sources told the Daily News. The Minister instructed footwear manufacturers to discuss with Customs Authorities and fix a minimum value at Customs level for imported footwear in order to maintain a competitive price for locally manufactured footwear. The minister also instructed the Customs to closely monitor the import of footwear and to ensure that importers strictly abide by regulations. |
