International Garment Machinery, Fabric & Accessories show The inaugural International Garment Machinery, Fabric and Accessories Show conducted jointly by the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre and Hi-Tech International Trade Fair India (Pvt.) Ltd was inaugurated last Friday. Minister of Industries Janaka Bogollagama was the Chief Guest. The Minister said that there were malpractices in the awarding of the garment quota system for a long period and added that he would wipe out corruption. "Only a few have access to a large amount of quotas and this has to be changed and the quota has to be equally distributed," he said. The Minister said that if there is a fair distribution of quotas and if new technology can be added to the Sri Lankan garment trade the free quota system policy coming with effect in 2005 would not be a problem. He paid a tribute to the late President Ranasinghe Premadasa for industrializing the garment trade and making it the number one foreign exchange earner today. The exhibition attracted the largest number of international participants to Sri Lanka with 75 exhibitors from India, Singapore, China, Taiwan and Turkey. The first Secretary Indian High Commission, Ms. R. Sindhu was also present at the event. The exhibition was concluded last Sunday. |
