Wattala Burghers win six-a-side The first ever six-a-side cricket tournament organized by the Burgher Association was played at the P. Sara Stadium on Saturday. Over 30 teams consisting of members of the Burgher Association from several parts of the island participated in this tournament, witnessed by a large gathering of over 500 members braving the inclement weather. In the men's final Wattala beat Welisara by 48 runs to claim the Burgher Association Challenge Trophy for men. Wattala led by Rodney Koelmeyer included Nevin Noyahr, Niron Herft, Maurice De La Zilwa, Marlon Meurling, Richie Koelmeyer, Nirantha Silva and Keith Daniels. The Man of the Match award and the award for best batsman was won by Niron Herft while the best bowler's award went to Keith Daniels both from Wattala. The women's final saw Ratmalana-Mount Lavinia beat Battaramulla by 5 wickets. Ratmalana-Mount Lavinia team comprised of Karen Diaz (Captain) Gwendoline Adams, Shalini Perera, Candice Harmer, Marielyse Martin and Venessa Manuel. The lady of the match award was won by Karen Diaz, the best batsman award was won by Therese Bastiansz of the Battaramulla team and best bowler award went to Marielyse Martin from Ratmalana/Mount Lavinia. |
