by Sarath Malalasekera

Notorious criminal Karate Dhammika alias Master and eight others who are alleged to have killed Kaduwela Wasantha and six others in the Navagamuwa Police area were arrested by a special police team from the Mirihana Police assisted by the Aluthgama police yesterday morning at a hotel in Alutgama.

Western Province South DIG Sirisena Herath who is directing the investigations conducted by Senior SP Raja Weerakoon and SP Cecil Perera revealed that the special police team was able to arrest the main culprits who committed the crime at Bomiriya within few a hours.

Three more suspects including a former STF member who are alleged to have been involved in the killing are to be arrested, DIG Herath said.

Investigations also revealed that the main suspect Karate Dhammika and another who are now in custody are very close associates of a prominent politician of the last regime.

The seven persons who were killed at Bomiriya are Dharmasiri Jayaratne alias Kaduwela Wasantha, R.R.D. Jayantha of Kaduwela, D. Gunasekera alias Sampath of Kaduwela, A.H.I.P. Rukman of Athurugiriya, I.C. Siriwardena alias Malabe Chaminda, Kaduwela P. Jayasinghe and Jayawansa Renuka of Nawagamuwa.

The Police team have recovered one 9 mm pistol, two T 56 weapons, 10 T 56 magazines, two .38 revolvers, two 9 mm magazines, 24 9 mm magazines, .38 special ammunition, one revolver hoister, 262 rounds of T 56 ammunition, 38 M 16 ammunition, six (LL) 94 ammunition, one handcuff, two sets of uniforms of Sub Inspector of Police, one set of weapons cleaning tools, one pair of jungle boots, eight pairs of army boots, Army uniform apparels and camouflage uniforms from the suspects.

Some of the items had been unearthed at a place near Homagama on information provided by a suspect, the Police said.

The Police described the suspects taken into custody as a rival group of Kaduwela Wasantha. Police have also recovered a van suspected to be stolen from Homagama which had been used by the assailants to commit the crime.

The Navagamuwa Police investigating the killing of Kaduwela Wasantha and others had found a number plate bearing registration number 251 - 3878. Police are trying to ascertain whether this is the correct number of the vehicle in which the assailants came.

"We have to forward this number to the RMV to obtain the name of the genuine owner of the vehicle," Inspector Mangala Dehideniya, OIC, Navagamuwa Police said yesterday.

The Army number plate bearing the registration number - Army 5858 in which the assailants came to commit the crime is definitely a false number plate, OIC Dehideniya said.

On Sunday morning, an unidentified gang wearing military type uniforms killed one of the most wanted underworld gang leaders Kaduwela Wasantha and five others at Medhananda Mawatha, Pahala Bomiriya in the Navagamuwa Police area.
