Nepal says army kills about 90 Maoist rebels KATHMANDU, May 28 (Reuters) - Nepal troops killed around 90 Maoist rebels in a counter attack after their military camp in the west of the Himalayan kingdom was raided overnight, officials said on Monday. "Around 90 rebels were killed," said an official who did not want to be identified. "The operations are still going on." He said Nepali forces might have suffered some casualties in the battle in Khara, 600 km (375 miles) west of the capital Kathmandu, but he had no further details. The Maoists are battling to install a communist republic in the impoverished country, sandwiched between India and China. The government on Monday extended a state of emergency giving security forces sweeping powers to fight the rebellion, in which more than 4,000 people have been killed since it erupted in 1996. |
