Wesley's Kanage Dwight here

Here on holiday from Canada is the former Wesley and CR and FC ruggerite, K. Dwight-Kanage, to his wide circle of friends, represented Wesley College and CR & FC at rugger in the late fifties and early sixties. He did well at hockey too, and had as well a fondness for the pole vault event, in which he excelled at the school's district level.

His contemporaries at rugby while at school were Noel Beven, Edward Buell, Samat, Ranjit Abeydeera, Neville Perera and yet others. While at the CR & FC as an inside, he played in the company of Ago Paiva, Kavan Rambukwelle, Eddie Buell, Devaka Rodrigo, Didacus de Almeida, Ivan Diaz, Rajiv and Sari de Silva, Neville Perera, Dorai, C. V. (Puggy) Gooneratne, Rajan (Bola) Phillips amongst others.

As a left arm inswing bowler he blossomed out to be among the wickets for the Tamil Union, Shaw Wallace and the JEDB.

He lost no time in being an active supporter of the Wesley rugby team, as they battled against Trinity last Saturday at the CR & FC grounds. And was emotionally stirred to near tears, when his old school inflicted a resounding defeat over Trinity for the first time - Something which had eluded Wesley thus far.

In the midst of the euphoria that prevailed, Kanage's friends in reunion quipped. "You did well to come all the way from Canada, to savour this historic moment in Wesley's rugby."

Kanage and his wife Chandra, a dental surgeon, along with their two sons, Prasanna and Prabodha migrated to Canada soon after the communal riots in 1983. Through these 19 years in Ontario, they do seem to be well established, with Kanage holding a very responsible position in a leading mercantile firm, whilst his elder son is an accomplished charted accountant and his younger son, a fourth year medical student.

Despite the high standard and quality of living out there, Kanage with a sense of nostalgia said there's no place like home and is yearning for the day, when he could come back and live in a home by a lagoon and watch things go by.
