CR struggle to beat Navy

Table leaders Ceylonese Rugby and Football Club went through several anxious moments before overcoming a gallant Navy outfit on Friday at Longden Place.

Navy's power-packed forwards came up with another fine display to rattle the CR 'eight' in the loose. Navy's Suranga, Kaluarachchi, Ravi Jayasuriya, Fernando, Malawana and Janarthan gave the CR 'eight' a horrid time with their fiery loose play. Even CR's three quarters could not make much headway with centres Kaluarachchi and Abeygunawardena being brought down time and again by their opposite numbers Kolonne and Gamage with some fierce tackling.

For the Red Shirts burly Savantha de Saram, Pavithra Fernando and Roshan Perera stood out in both attack and defence. Scrum half Champika Nishantha too had an excellent game and foxed the Navy defence several times with his sudden breaks from the base of the scrum.

The Colombo Hockey and Football Club came up with a power-packed display to rout Air Force by 58 points to 3 on Sunday.

The feature of their play was the smooth co-ordination between their three quarters and forwards which enabled them to cross the opponents goal line on ten occasions.

Sturdily built flanker Bertie Jayasekera powered his way pack the opponents defence several times while Sameera Wijeyesinghe, Prasad Batepola and Nevein Perera too gave a sterling display in the loose.

Winger Ajit Upawansa too stood out with his powerful runs down the flank while centre Yuganthara Karunaratne and full back Nalin Dissanayake breached the Airmen's defence with their probing runs.

As expected the Army-Police game turned out to be a close tussle for supremacy between their power-packed forwards with the soldiers emerging victorious by 22 points to 17.

Full back T. A. Silva played a key role in their success. He contributed 17 points by firing across five penalties and converting the solitary try scored by No. 8 Dharmapala.

Police's three quarters gave a woeful display and squandered the abundance of possession which came their way through the excellent line out jumping of Wilson and Kulatunge and the slick hooking of Muthumala in the sat scrums.

Kandy Sports Club scored a runaway 43-nil win over home town rivals Kandy Youths. The defending champions ran in six tries of which five were converted by Nalaka Weerakkody who also put over a penalty.

Galle RFC who are making their debut in 'A' division rugby scored their maiden win by beating Old Zahirians by 17-5 at Maitland Crescent on Friday.
