by Uditha Kumarasinghe The Samurdhi Flag Day will be held throughout the country on May 31 coinciding with the World Anti-Smoking Day. The proceeds from the sale of flags this year will be used for the socio-economic empowerment of low income families who have not yet economically strengthened themselves, a Ministry spokesman said. Another objective of the flag day is to educate the society on the harmful effects of smoking and consumption of liquor and encourage them to abstain from such habits which have largely contributed towards poverty among society. The Ministry seeks public assistance to make this event a success and enhance the Social Development Fund.
